Minnesota House Republicans Stage Coup at Capitol

Members of the House Republican Caucus Willfully Defy Minnesotans’ Votes, Legislative Rules, and Court Ruling To Attempt Illegitimate Control

January 14, 2025

Faith in Minnesota, a political home for everyday Minnesotans leading together to create a Minnesota that works for everyone, releases the following statement regarding the recent House Republican actions at the Capitol:

“It must be stated in clear, unambiguous terms: what Minnesota House Republicans are putting on display at the Capitol is a coup. Despite not having a quorum to conduct official legislative business–confirmed by Secretary of State Steve Simon, a court ruling confirming Brad Tabke as the 54A winner, and outstanding special election underway, Republican members walked away from a long-negotiated agreement with House Democrats to carry out their own appointments of leadership for this session. They have further signaled intent to illegally unseat the duly elected Representative Tabke, thereby disenfranchising over 20,000 Minnesota voters.

“With the images of the January 6th insurrection still seared into the memories of Americans, Minnesota voters cannot and should not take threats to our democratic process and institutions lightly. This is not normal. This is unacceptable. And this must not stand.

“Any Republican House Member of good conscience must honor the will of voters over party loyalty by immediately speaking out against this dangerous, illegal, and anti-democratic action. Voters expect our elected officials to abide by election results and work to make our state a place where every family across race, income, and political party can thrive. They must respect the legislative rules, court rulings, and will of voters.”
